Providing Effective Support for Industry PhDs - Information for Supervisors
In a doctorate in cooperation with industry, doctoral candidates, the university, and the company work closely together. As the academic supervisor, you help ensure the academic quality of the doctoral dissertation while also fostering effective collaboration with the industry partner.
What should you keep in mind?
- Discuss roles, responsibilities, and expectations among doctoral candidates, the university, and the company at an early stage.
- A supervision agreement can help establish a binding framework for the collaboration.
- The company should also designate a contact person with academic qualifications.
- Even when doctoral candidates are primarily engaged in activities outside the university, they should maintain ties to the university and the academic community.
- Support their participation in colloquia, academic conferences, and scholarly events.
- Doctoral candidates should have access to specialized and interdisciplinary professional development opportunities.
- Even for a doctorate conducted externally, the requirements of the university of applied sciences in terms of academic quality apply.
- The rules of good scientific practice apply to all parties involved.
- Scientific publications and the company’s commercial interests may conflict with one another.
- Help doctoral candidates address issues such as confidentiality, publication planning, patents, and rights of use at an early stage.
- Procedures and deadlines for the company’s review of publications should be agreed upon as early as possible.

Quality standards guide
The German Rectors’ Conference (in German Hochschulrektorenkonferenz, HRK) has compiled guidelines on quality assurance for the doctorate involving an external employment contract (available in German). These guidelines provide in-depth guidance on collaboration between universities, doctoral candidates, and external partners and describe, among other things, requirements regarding the selection of a research topic, supervision, integration into the academic community, publication, and the handling of intellectual property.
