Pursuing or Finishing the Doctorate while on the Job
What is a doctorate on the job?
A doctorate on the job means that a person pursues a doctorate in parallel with their professional work outside the academic sphere. Professional work and academic studies take place simultaneously and must be coordinated. Unlike a doctoral program that takes place entirely within the context of academic work at a university or research institution, in a doctorate on the job, professional work outside the doctoral program remains an essential part of the candidate’s daily routine.
This can take various forms: The professional work may be closely related to the dissertation topic or may lie in a different field. The amount of time devoted to professional work and the organization of the dissertation research can also vary.
